How much data does a VPN use on my phone?
Updated
A VPN itself adds only about 4 to 10 percent on top of what your apps already download, for encryption and packet headers. What uses data is the activity: an hour of browsing takes roughly 60–150 MB, music 40–150 MB, a video call 300–600 MB, and HD video 1–3 GB. 500 MB a day covers a normal day without video.
"Will a VPN eat my data?" is one of the first questions people ask before installing one, especially on a plan with a daily or monthly limit. The short answer is no: the VPN adds a small, predictable overhead. The apps you use decide almost everything. This guide puts numbers on both.
How much extra data does the VPN add?
Every packet that goes through a VPN gets wrapped in an encrypted envelope with its own header. That envelope is the overhead.
| VPN protocol | Typical overhead | Why |
|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | about 4–5% | A compact 60–80 byte header on packets of up to ~1,400 bytes |
| VLESS with Reality (TLS on port 443) | about 5–10% | TLS records and TCP acknowledgements on top of the data |
| OpenVPN | about 10–15% | Larger headers and more control traffic |
So 1 GB of video becomes roughly 1.04–1.10 GB through the VPN. Keep-alive messages while the phone sits idle add a few hundred kilobytes a day at most.
A VPN can even save data in a few cases, for example when it blocks a hotel network from injecting ads into pages, but don't count on it.
How much data do common apps use per hour?
These are typical ranges at default quality settings. Actual numbers depend on the app, the quality you pick and how much you scroll.
| Activity | Data per hour (approx.) | Source / note |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging (text, a few photos) | 5–20 MB | Photos and voice notes are most of it |
| Maps and navigation | 5–20 MB | Offline maps bring it close to zero |
| Web browsing | 60–150 MB | Around 2–3 MB per modern page |
| Music streaming | 40–150 MB | Spotify: 96 kbps ≈ 43 MB/h, 320 kbps ≈ 144 MB/h |
| Voice call (WhatsApp, Telegram) | 30–60 MB | About 0.5–1 MB per minute |
| Social feeds with autoplay video | 300 MB–1 GB | Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts |
| Video call | 300–600 MB | Zoom one-to-one in HD ≈ 1.2 Mbps ≈ 540 MB/h |
| Video, standard definition | about 1 GB | Netflix SD ≈ 1 GB per hour |
| Video, HD | 1–3 GB | Netflix HD up to 3 GB per hour |
| Video, 4K | up to 7 GB | Netflix Ultra HD |

What fits in 500 MB a day?
500 MB is the daily allowance on SimpleV's free plan, and a useful yardstick for any limited plan. Each row is what you could do with the full 500 MB on its own, including VPN overhead:
| If you only… | You get roughly |
|---|---|
| Browse the web | 3–7 hours |
| Listen to music at normal quality | 6–11 hours |
| Make voice calls | 8–15 hours |
| Make video calls | 50–90 minutes |
| Scroll short-video feeds | 30–90 minutes |
| Watch video in SD | about 30 minutes |
| Watch video in HD | 10–25 minutes |
A typical day of messages, maps, email, some browsing and a short call fits comfortably. A day with a long video call or an episode of a series doesn't.
How much VPN data do I need per month?
| How you use the VPN | Daily | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Only on public Wi-Fi, now and then | 50–200 MB | 1–5 GB |
| Always on, light use (messages, maps, browsing) | 200–500 MB | 6–15 GB |
| Always on, with music and some calls | 0.5–1.5 GB | 15–45 GB |
| Always on, with daily video | 2–5 GB | 60–150 GB |
If you are in the first two rows, a free plan with a daily allowance is usually enough. If you are in the last two, you will hit any free limit within the first hours, and an unlimited plan is the practical choice.
How to use less data through a VPN
- Lower video quality in YouTube or Netflix settings. Going from HD to SD saves more than any VPN tweak.
- Turn off autoplay in social apps and use their data-saver mode.
- Download before you go: offline maps, playlists and episodes over home Wi-Fi.
- Check which apps go through the VPN. On Android, Settings → Network & internet → Data usage shows usage per app.
- Use WireGuard when the network allows it. It has the smallest overhead of the common protocols.
How SimpleV counts your data
- Free plan: 500 MB every day, refreshed daily, no account needed. The app shows how much is left today.
- Bonus data: extra data from invites and promotions never expires and is used only after the daily allowance runs out.
- Premium: no daily limit, 33 locations in 20 countries, up to 5 devices. Monthly €4.99, yearly €34.99, or a 7-day pass for €1.99 that doesn't renew (EU prices; Google Play shows your local price).
FAQ
Does a VPN use data when I'm not using my phone?
Almost none. The tunnel sends small keep-alive messages, which add up to a few hundred kilobytes a day. Apps syncing in the background use data with or without a VPN.
Does a VPN use more data on Wi-Fi or on mobile data?
The same amount. The overhead depends on the protocol, not the network. It only matters on mobile data or a metered connection, because that's where you pay for it.
Why does my VPN app show more data than my phone's data counter?
Because the VPN counts the encrypted traffic including its headers and retransmissions, while some phone counters show what apps received. A difference of 5 to 10 percent is normal.
Is 500 MB a day enough for a VPN?
For messaging, maps, browsing and music, yes. For video calls or streaming, no: one hour of HD video uses 1 to 3 GB.
Does WireGuard use less data than other VPN protocols?
Yes. WireGuard's overhead is around 4 to 5 percent, lower than OpenVPN or TLS-based protocols. The difference only becomes noticeable at many gigabytes a month.
